Loud and clear is an S9...S5 would have been closer to full of static, but
better than not at all. The radio in use at the time is an AM radio, which
was also susceptible to atmospheric interference (storm and static noise).

I've often wondered about the ramifications of the aircraft antenna
(long wire) being horizontally polarized and the ship's antenna being
vertically or horizontally polarized.

Anyone know if the ship's antenna was also horizontally polarized?

Ahhh. A long wire antenna stretched from cabin to tail means that she
would have to change course to find the null. She couldn't have if she
didn't hear them at all.

Bearings of the Electra? The Electra knew where it was so the question is
where is the aircraft?

Actually, the battery on the ship's range finder had died because of the
ineptitude of the radio operator's apprentice. Had the battery been up to
snuff, they could have told Earhart where she was and guided her to the
island easily enough.
