Ärende: Putin Blinks
====================
Hello Alexander,

RW>> The 1st bomb (which was the 2nd bomb) on Hiroshima was another
RW>> test of a 'different' type of atom bomb. There were two types in
 RW>> exisitance at the time.

ak>>> Yeah, it was a very interesting scientific question, after burning
ak>>> 150 thousand people with the first bomb! Would a plutonium bomb
ak>>> kill more people or less than a uranium one?

RW>> But instead of practice, it was an incentive for Japan to
RW>> surrender, unconditionally. Otherwise, there would have been an
RW>> invasion of Japan and the casuallty count would have been in the
RW>> millions, including Japanese, Americans and any other forces
RW>> involved. It was deemed better to lose a couple hundred thousand
RW>> enemy than Americans and enemies in the millions. This would have
RW>> included a lot of Ruskies, as they were already chomping at the
RW>> bit, ready to get 'even' with the Japs for who knows what.

AK>It was America who wanted to get 'even' I believe it was for the
AK>Pearl Harbor attack.

The moment Japanese figher pilots dropped bombs on Pearl Harbor
was when America was at war. FDR merely announced to the Congress
that "a state of war exists between the United States and the Empire
of Japan." As such, it was not so much a declaration of war by either
the president or the Congress as it was a statement of fact.

FDR did not like Japanese, or anybody who looked Japanese. To him,
anybody with slanty eyes was a Japanese. Truman was even worse than
FDR when it came to Japanese. Had FDR still been alive, he would have
accepted the original Japanese offer to surrender, which came a full
month before the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. But such a
surrender was not good enough for Truman, as he wanted to see what an
atomic bomb could do to real people. And when those real people
happened to be Japanese, well, it was a no-brainer. And then, to
add emphasis, Truman did it again, dropping an atom bomb on Nagasaki.
Truman could have continued dropping atomic bombs on Japanese cities,
and would have gladly done so had the Russians not come to their
senses.

AK>As for the USSR, the small Kuril islands were and have been now
AK>a low value territories.

If the Kiril islands are such "low value territories" then why does
Russia choose to hold on to them? The Cold War is over, and there is
nothing the Kiril islands can offer Russia that Russians would want.
So why not have your President Putin give Prime Minister Abo a great
big bear hug, a kiss on both cheeks, and the deed to the Kiril islands?
Go ahead. It will make you feel good. And President Putin might even
take his shirt off and, and, and, do something.

AK>Fish was caught in the Sea of Okhotsk and have been caught now by
AK>both Russians and Japanese. Probably, the Kurils have some strategic
AK>value for Russia, for instance, like the Folklend islands, for the
AK>UK.

Whatever strategic value for Russia the Kiril islands might have had
went out with the end of the Cold War.

AK>As for an incentive for Japan, I can say that if the Americans had
AK>dropped their bombs in the vicinity of Hiroshima and Nagasaki the
AK>civilian damage would have been small, but the Japanese would have
AK>seen clearly the bombs power. And then America could threaten Japan
AK>that next time such bombs would be dropped, for instance, on Tokio
AK>where the government and Emperor were.

That idea had been discussed, and thought about, among the generals.
But Truman would never go along with it, due to his contempt for the
Japanese people. As such, Truman had to make an example, showing the
world (and Stalin) he really did have the balls to incinerate innocent
men, women and children.

ak>>>>> So, your argument is poor.
RW>>>> Not at all. President Truman wrote in his diary that he had
RW>>>> ordered the bomb dropped on a "purely military" target, so that
RW>>>> "military objectives and soldiers and sailors are the target and
 RW>>>> not women and children."
ak>>> Lie doesn't help in this case.
RW>> An omission of a Presidential request in a military order isn't a
RW>> lie... at worst it could be considered neglect to pay attention by
 RW>> the SoW.

ak>> If the bombs, for instance in Hiroshima, had been dropped on ships
ak>> in the sea port area it could have some sense, but in reality the
ak>> bomb had been dropped in the city's center, on the residential
 ak>> area.

RW>> Actually, an atom bomb is timed to explode above the ground,
RW>> spreading the maximum energy more than it would if it were exploded
RW>> at ground level or lower. As much as it weighs, that would have
RW>> been a cavern the size of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Exploding a
RW>> bomb underground makes a big hole, but the energy is deflected
 RW>> straight up.

AK>I said not of the height of the dropping but of the place.

Roy forgets that we nuked Mississippi. Twice. Exploding a nuke
underground does something far different than what Roy claims.
