That depends on too many other factors these days.  For compressed formats with
questionable decoding it may not make a difference at all. Also hardware
capabilties rear their ugly heads when speaking of these particular issues. 
Offhand, without knowing for sure, the Audiophile 192 ought to serve you well. 
More than likely the best of that world in that price range.  I prefer those
connections for the IO.

I was under the impression that flac is uncompressed, including the sndfile
version of flac.  I'll have to check but offhand my impression is that the
reason there is a byte reduction is the amount of information that is being
stored rather than compression.  Don't quote me on this.

Anyhow I've decided to go with ecasound's wav for the so-called originals and
use those to produce any other formats from.  That seems to be the simplest and
best all things considered.

Agreed and disagreed.  In this case I object to the 'wasteful' part above. I've
learned long ago that keeping data in it's rawest form possible is always the
best idea.  This way when everyone and their dog abandons the current 'must
have' toy in favour of a newfangled toy you'll still be able to replicate
anything.  From this angle, and on this particular topic, that would be wav
although flac would also be a very good choice but then a little more limiting
as far as apps that can successfully deal with it.

Yes usually.  However, sometimes I even wonder.  This time I think I am right
for this particular job.

Why buy a 32-bit processor if 16-bit is all one requires?

That seems to be a growing trend.

In this case there is more to it than that.  All the tiny and sensitive gizmoes
between the cartridge and the motor are having a much bigger impact.  I doubt
suitable replacements for them can be obtained, and even if one could find
them, then it is questionable how well I could finetune them so that it won't
screw up the total turntable scheme. I think I've pushed this puppy as far as
it can be pushed but I'll use it as long as I can.  I have serious doubts it'll
last too much longer and all the grease in the world won't save it.  :-/
